YOUTH
SAILING
Introduce your child to sailing in a safe, fun and encouraging environment on Westbury Lake.
FOR YOUNG SAILORS
SAILING FOR AGES 8–18
Our youth sailing programme is the heart of what WWYSA does. We welcome young people aged 8 to 18 to learn to sail on Westbury Lake — starting with their very first time in a boat and progressing all the way to confident, independent sailing.
Courses are delivered by qualified RYA instructors in a structured, supportive environment. Small group sizes mean every young sailor gets proper attention, and safety is always our first priority — two safety boats are on the water whenever we're out.
Sessions run throughout the sailing season — typically April through to October — with occasional winter training sessions for those who want to keep progressing.
HOW IT WORKS
THE RYA PATHWAY
Young sailors progress through the RYA's structured stages — from first time in a boat to skilled, confident sailor. There's no rush; everyone works at their own pace.
Start Sailing
First time in a boat. Basic boat parts, getting afloat, sailing on a reach with an instructor.
Stage 1
Basic boat handling, tacking, sailing on different points. Starting to sail independently.
Stage 2
Gybing, sailing upwind and downwind, self-rescue techniques and more independence.
Stage 3
Confident all-round sailing. Beginning to sail without instructor on board.
Stage 4 & 5
Advanced techniques, racing skills, and preparation for instructor-level training.
* Exact stage names and content are set by the Royal Yachting Association. Ask our instructors for the full syllabus details.
